Mattress Covers
Why do you need a mattress cover? There is a wide range of reasons for using a mattress cover, the first of which is to prolong the life of your mattress and protect it from daily wear and tear. The other reasons are that mattress covers include: hygiene, enhancing softness of the mattress and for back and joint support. So what do you look for when you are going out to buy a mattress cover? Here are some pointers:
- If you have memory foam mattress it is important to know that these are particularly susceptible to damage from liquids and moisture. Most likely these types of mattresses come with their own covers. Usually such mattress covers have micro pores which allow air to pass through so that the mattress can breathe. The cover would also be treated in such a way that it repels dust, mites and mold. Hypoallergenic and CFC-free these mattresses are good in the long run. The mattress cover is supposed to protect the mattress and it encases it, often in zipped form. This makes it easy for maintenance as you can take it off easily for washing. If you were to wash mattress covers, remember always to wash them in cold water and use air-dry (no heat option) in your drying machine.
- There is another good option for mattress covers: the Tempurpedic mattress cover. This cover is water proof and made especially for proper handling of temperature fluctuations as it remains cool in summer and never heats up over your own body temperature. Mostly used in hospitals, you could also get one if you wanted to. This also has a non-slip bottom and easy to maintain using non-chlorine products.
- The three main aspects which you must look for when buying mattress covers are: they must be water and moisture resistant; they must be able to breathe; they must easily unzip for easy maintenance.
- If you are prone to allergies, you could limit your choices to Euphoria Organic Wool and latex mattress pads which use natural lamb wool. They do not contain any chemical or dyes and are dust and mite resistant. For allergy prone sleepers, mattress covers or pads made from cotton, alpaca wool, goose down and fleece wool are also good options.
- One of the best aspects of memory foam mattress covers and pads are that they neatly conform to body contours and can give you hours of restful sleep while protecting your mattress. Memory foam mattress covers are available in a variety of thickness. It is natural that you will get more support from thicker pads but these might cost more than the thinner counterparts.
The essence of buying the right mattress cover is to find one which not only protects your mattress but offers you the comfort and rest which you richly deserve.
